Many Afghan female-identifying women* arrived in New York City with their education and economic goals as part of their resettling journey. This past year in 2022, the IRC in NY’s Education & Learning (E&L) team designed a program for Afghan women.

Global partners have successfully called on the United Nations to adopt an International Day of Play to champion and protect children’s right to play. The International Day of Play will be June 11th, with the inaugural celebration to take place in 2024.

Refugee and immigrant community members in the West Hill neighborhood of Kent are growing fresh, organic produce for their families at a brand-new community garden site. Thank you to the countless community partners and volunteers who have brought this exciting project to life!

Returning back to in-person learning at the IRC in NY’s Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) has been a highlight for the Education & Learning (E&L) team. NYSA is a five-week program that prepares newly arrived refugee children and youth for success at their grade level in the New York City public school system. The IRC in NY is thrilled about NYSA celebrating its 23rd year, bringing social-emotional learning, creative education, and a culturally responsive curriculum to each student. 

Students were excited to make new friends and join the fun at this summer’s 23rd annual Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA)! This year's NYSA ran for five weeks from July 11 to August 16.  

Clever Octopus's Craft with a Cause program supports families and individuals by crafting and donating useful items out of materials that would otherwise end up in the landfill.

Thanks to the “Resilient Futures” project, Svitlana from Ukraine and Justyna from Poland are making a new start in Germany and successfully founding their own companies.
