In December, IRC in Seattle, King County, and DSHS collaborated to organize a wonderful wrap-up event celebrating an innovative partnership that helped provide temporary housing to hundreds of refugees at the former Silver Cloud Hotel in Redmond.

Learning Through Play in Uganda
Enid, 30, teaches refugee children in the Kyaka Refugee Settlement in western Uganda. Over the last two years, she has integrated Learning through Play into her classroom with support from the PlayMatters program. PlayMatters helps teachers use learning techniques that build upon a child’s natural desire to play, fostering a range of critical skills. In 2023, PlayMatters introduced the LEGO six bricks concept.

Nelson - The hands that make a home
Nelson Bulambo, 24, fled his home in the Democratic Republic of Congo after his uncle was killed and his entire family was threatened. Now he's built a new life in Uganda as a barber through an IRC program that helps refugees and migrants overcome barriers to financial stability. In this video, Nelson's mentor Nabaasa Allen talks about their partnership.

IRC expands free English classes in Gwinnett, DeKalb counties
Earlier this year, the IRC in Atlanta’s Adult Education team added new weekly free English classes in Gwinnett County in partnership with OneStop locations. The classes are held at OneStop Norcross and OneStop Buford and both sites have a beginner and intermediate class. Classes are offered every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10am-12pm and from 6-8pm.
