New York City refugee women are growing produce, community, and job skills at the IRC New Roots Community Farm in the Bronx

Hawaa and her husband Yousef, moved to Utah in 2015. Since then they have found comfort in growing fruits and vegetables at the New Roots farm. In this story, they talk about what tastes of home they remember, and dishes that they have brought from across the globe.

Naomi is one of dozens of immigrant, refugee, and new American entrepreneurs that have launched their small businesses with support from Spice Kitchen Incubator. Her business, Prin-Ya Custard, has a unique business model!

Earlier this year RAI-US launched the Pathways to Careers in Resettlement, Asylum, and Integration Scholarship Opportunity, as a new resource to diversify and enhance the talent pipeline, specifically targeting RAI-US internships. The scholarship’s main objective is to promote career paths in humanitarian work for BIPOC and/or immigrant populations and further our commitment to a diverse and inclusive internship experience. After receiving 35 applications from RAI-US interns, 8 interns have been selected to receive a $5,000 scholarship. One of those eight was chosen from the IRC in Oakland. Oakland is excited to introduce this year’s scholarship recipient: Gianna D’Arrigo!

On December 3, the International Rescue Committee in Silver Spring brought together over 50 clients, volunteers, and staff for a Thanksgiving meal and afternoon of festivities. Sampling traditional American fare such as roasted turkey and cranberry sauce alongside delicacies like homemade dolmas and Syrian pastries, refugee families and IRC volunteers and staff had an opportunity to share their cultural traditions with each other and express the things that they are thankful for in their lives.

One of the many services offered by the Immigration department at the IRC in San Diego is a free Citizenship Test Preparation Course to help individuals learn the material they will need to know in order to pass the United States citizenship examination. 

Adult Education programs provide community and crucial language skills for refugees, asylees, and immigrants looking to advance in New York City.

Natalie Youngers, her husband, and their farm are strong supporter/suppliers of Project CHOP and pour their heart and soul into growing the most savory produce.

Inspired by March Madness basketball brackets, the IRC in Atlanta’s FoodCorps Service Member, Meggie Stewart, partnered with Indian Creek Elementary cafeteria staff to encourage students to try and enjoy a greater variety of vegetables.
