Tutoring Together! Tutor

Report to: Youth Program Specialist
Volunteer Description:
The Tutoring Together Volunteer provides supplemental academic coaching for supporting middle and high school age youths’ growth and confidence as newcomers through mentorship, language acquisition, core school subject support, navigation of school norms & standards in USA, and encouraging caregiver engagement in USA education system.
Responsibilities:
- Support with homework, test studying, practice tests, reading practice, English language, and facilitate learning activities that encourage academic growth mindset and support child development.
- Engage parents in child’s tutoring, when possible, for parents to learn how to support children in continued academic growth after Tutoring Together program.
- Attend tutor trainings and meetings lead by IRC staff during time in volunteer program.
- Maintain open and effective communication with IRC Youth education team members and volunteer coordinators. Report regularly on tutor sessions and any problems or concerns.
Session Length & Location:
The Tutoring Together program duration is a school semester length, a 10-week commitment. The time commitment is minimum 2 tutor sessions, weekly for 45-60 minutes each session. These tutor sessions will take place after school or on the weekends, as decided between volunteer and client. Tutor sessions will take place in-person at the client’s home or at a community location (library or community center) if preferred by client and volunteer.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Strong desire to support academic growth in individuals and families, and enthusiasm for working in a multi-cultural setting.
- Strong communication abilities, including use of Tarjimly or translation apps.
- Comfortable working in a cross-cultural environment and with child language learners, sometimes with little or no English proficiency.
- Ability to take initiative, work independently, and follow through on critical tasks.
- Fluent in spoken and written English. Bi-lingual abilities in a language spoken by an IRC client group is desired.
