SCOPE OF WORK:

IRC San Diego has operated Youth Programs in San Diego County since 1996, helping more than 300 refugee youth every year successfully stay in school, graduate, and transition to college or a career. The Youth Department’s focus is on newly arrived refugee and immigrant youth who may have experienced trauma and continue to navigate a great deal of stress through the process of acculturation and language acquisition. Throughout the year, IRC’s Youth Department facilitates a variety of programs to support students academic and social-emotional learning growth.

IRC San Diego currently facilitates academic tutoring at three different high school sites in City Heights and El Cajon, with the potential to expand service areas. Volunteer tutors will work in person one-on-one and with small groups of students to support with assignment completion, subject matter learning, and/or English Language development. Tutors will provide a positive, encouraging, safe environment for students to develop and utilize their skills and understand their assignments.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Tutors will guide students in utilizing their skills to understand and work on homework assignments in various high school subjects, including but not limited to: English, math, literature, history, science, etc.; sometimes assistance is requested for college and/or scholarship applications;

· Tutors will be paired with students based on their subject matter expertise;

· Tutors will provide students with strategies for completing homework and time management;

· Tutors will create a positive, encouraging, safe environment for students to learn and develop their skills;

· Tutors will be flexible, patient, and understanding of student needs;

· Tutors will communicate with IRC Staff regarding any issues or availability changes.

 

VOLUNTEER BENEFITS:

· Volunteers will be trained on best practices to support the academic growth of refugee youth and English Language Learners;

· Volunteers will gain insight into various refugee and immigrant issues and the support systems that enable them to thrive;

· Volunteers will receive ongoing feedback to develop skills working with newcomer youth;

· Volunteers will develop meaningful connections with IRC-SD staff and interns, other tutors, and students;

· Volunteers will get professional experience in a diverse, client-driven non-profit organization.

 

TIME REQUIREMENTS:

· Tutors are required to be available for a minimum of 1 day per week between the hours of 2 pm and 6 pm. The tutoring schedule for the 2023-2024 academic year is not yet finalized, but tutoring sessions typically occur Monday – Thursday for 2 hours per session.

· Tutors are required to show up for in-person tutoring unless otherwise noted.

· Tutors are expected to commit to a minimum of 3 months of service.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Must be 18 years of age or older

· Must be in San Diego

· Familiarity with one or more common high school subjects

· Experience working with refugees or English language learners a plus

· Experience working with high school-age youth (ages 13-18), a plus

· Experience tutoring or working in an academic setting a plus

· Personable and comfortable working in a diverse, inclusive, multi-cultural setting

· Must undergo and pass a background check clearance and Livescan fingerprinting

· Access to laptop, computer, or other device suitable for tutoring with access to Zoom and Wi-Fi connection if virtual sessions are offered.
