TITLE: Volunteer Youth Academic Tutor
LOCATION: Elizabeth, Jersey City, Newark NJ

DURATION: 90 Minutes Twice a Week for 9 Weeks
 

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst
humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and
26 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home.

SCOPE OF VOLUNTEER WORK: The IRC in New Jersey seeks volunteer tutors to support English language learners among newcomer refugee youth who have been settled in New Jersey for nearly 6 months within Jersey City, Elizabeth, and Newark NJ starting the FIRST WEEK OF JANUARY. Volunteers will work with refugee youth individually within the home to improve English Language Acquisition/Learning. Tutors are academic coaches and positive role models who want to help IRC youth succeed in school. Tutors are not people who are expected to receive, give, or loan money.

TUTOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Attend an onsite orientation and 3-day long training at the IRC Elizabeth office and complete
associated IRC online trainings/background check
● One on one individualized in-home tutoring
● Tutors should be able to create a welcoming environment that fosters community and learning
among program participants
● Interact with diverse populations effectively and respectfully
● Tutor works with assigned students for 90 minutes twice a week for the duration of 8 consecutive
weeks.
● Tutors will engage their assigned student in 30 minutes of ESL homework support/assistance as
well as 30 minutes of ESL instruction (speaking, writing, and/or reading activities)
● Have reliable/punctual transportation to and from the assigned student’s home twice a week for 8
consecutive weeks.
● Communicate regularly with the Youth Program Specialist, Education Coordinator and
parents/guardians regarding student’s progress, tutor support, challenges, etc.
● Comply with office policies and program procedures in a timely manner
● Proven ability to build community within individualized sessions and cultivate students
commitment to academic learning
● Timely documentation and submission of the Tutor Log after each individualized tutoring session
● Thorough, detailed knowledge and understanding of English grammar with the ability/openness to
learning from students and modify lesson plans to reflect student’s needs/interests (age, grade level, etc.) as well as the ability to teach and support the student’s language development in regards to writing, speaking, reading, and listening skills
● Ability to interact with diverse populations and empathize with people unfamiliar with local culture
● Demonstrated ability to work independently in a multicultural environment
● Ethical and professional conduct that facilitates the building of a respectful, trusting, and
collaborative relationship with program staff, students, and parents/guardians
● Arabic, Dari, Spanish, Pashto, and/or Swahili speaking preferred
