Volunteer Transit Trainers will work with an interpreter and the Adult Education team in the R&P Program. Bus passes will be provided. No background knowledge is required, you will be trained on how to teach this activity. Transits can be done on a very flexible schedule throughout the week. Each training session lasts approximately 2-4 hours depending on the location of the client's home.
Responsibilities:
Instruction: Provide clear and concise instructions on how to use public buses, including boarding, exiting, and transferring between routes.
Safety: Emphasize safety practices, such as waiting at designated stops, using handrails, and observing traffic signals.
Ticketing and Payment: Teach trainees how to purchase tickets or use electronic payment methods, and ensure they understand fare structures.
Route Planning: Assist trainees in planning their bus routes, including understanding bus schedules and route maps.
Real-World Practice: Accompany trainees on actual bus rides, guiding them through the process and addressing any questions or concerns.
Emergency Procedures: Educate trainees on what to do in case of emergencies, such as missed stops, delays, or medical issues while on board.
Communication: Encourage effective communication with bus drivers and fellow passengers, including asking for assistance when needed.
Confidence Building: Provide encouragement and emotional support to boost trainees' confidence in using public transportation.
Assessment: Assess trainees' progress and readiness to travel independently by bus.
Volunteer Requirements:
- Arizona Level One Fingerprint Card
- IRC Background Check
- Attend Transit Trainer orientation
- Minimum 3-4 hours a week
- Cultural Awareness working with clients
- Comfortable working with translators
