SCOPE OF ROLE: The SNAP Volunteer (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or food stamps) will assist the Casework Department in ensuring clients are connected to and know how to use food stamps. In connecting clients to these benefits, this volunteer will enable clients who are not yet financially self-sufficient to acquire food for their families while in early stages of resettlement!
COMMITMENT:
- Days and times: Monday-Friday between 9:00am and 5:00pm (exact days and times flexible based on client and volunteer availability)
- Frequency: weekly
- Hours: 2-3 hours per shift
LOCATION: Client home (typically Richmond city or Henrico), social services office, grocery store
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Pick up client from their home
- Transport client to social services office to pick up SNAP benefits (EBT card)
- Go with client to grocery store and instruct in how to use EBT card, practice shopping
- Follow up with Casework Team regarding any issues or unanswered questions
REQUIREMENTS:
- Basic familiarity with the Richmond and Henrico Department of Social Services a plus
- Basic understanding of DSS benefits program: SNAP, TANF, WIC a plus
- Willing to learn these programs
- Willing to work with an interpreter if needed
- Ability to adhere to IRC professional standards and volunteer policies including those around boundaries, confidentiality, COVID-19, etc.
