SCOPE OF WORK: Assist refugee families with the school enrollment process. Volunteers must support appointments related to school placement assessments and school registration and ensure a smooth first day of school. This role is critical in Dallas, Fort Worth, and Richardson, but support could be used in the DFW area generally, helping refugee youth integrate into their communities
COMMITMENT: Flexible support during working hours (9:00 AM to 5:00 PM). Weekly preferred, biweekly accepted. At least one shift per week/biweekly.
LOCATION: IRC Dallas office, local schools, and related appointments (typically Dallas, Fort Worth, Richardson, or other DFW areas.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist refugee families with school registration and enrollment
- Support school placement assessment appointments for refugee youth
- Accompany families to school orientation and help ensure a smooth first day of school
- Communicate with school staff to address any immediate concerns or needs
- Provide guidance to families about navigating school systems and requirements
- Work with translators (provided) to communicate with family when necessary
REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong communication skills and cultural sensitivity
- Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license
- Flexibility and adaptability to work with families during appointments
- Attention to detail and ability to assist with required paperwork
- Adhere to IRC professional standards and volunteer policies, including maintaining boundaries
