ABOUT THE JOB: The Financial Capability intern will play a vital role in supporting the International Rescue Committee's Afghan Youth Mentorship Program by engaging with local Afghan communities to identify recently arrived young women interested in learning about U.S. financial systems. Key responsibilities include conducting outreach to promote the program, developing marketing materials to attract participants, and creating instructional resources. The intern will also assist in securing donations for outings and events designed to enhance the mentorship experience. This position is crucial for empowering young women in their transition to life in the U.S. and contributing to the overall mission of fostering self-sufficiency and community integration.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES:  

  • The intern will gain valuable experience in community engagement, marketing and program development, as well as nonprofit fundraising and event coordination.
  • The intern will work alongside our Economic Empowerment team and gain hands-on program building experience. 
  • The intern will develop their self-sufficiency by working independently and becoming a self-starter 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • The intern will conduct outreach to local Afghan communities in IRC-LA's service area to identify recently arrived young women age 15-24 who are interested in understanding and navigating U.S. financial systems such as credit, financing higher education, etc. 
  • The intern will develop and implement marketing strategies to attract program participants, and create instructional and promotional materials. 
  • The intern will assist in securing donations for program outings and events, and have opportunities to expand their role if interested. Regular progress reporting and feedback sessions will also be integral to the role to ensure alignment with program goals and internship goals.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Solid experience in marketing or graphic design
  • Solid understanding of Afghan communities
  • Solid organizational skills/ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently
  • Strong teamwork skills for effective collaboration.
  • Proficiency in Dari or Pashto is highly desirable. 
  • Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity towards the vulnerable immigrant population, coupled with a strong commitment to aiding unaccompanied minors in their adjustment to life in the U.S. 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Culturally competent and proficient communication skills. 
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Enthusiastic about learning about the broader IRC mission, philosophy, global work, and local initiatives.
  • Willingness to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies.
