SCOPE OF ROLE: The Classroom Assistant Volunteer will assist the Adult Education team in building clients’ English skills. This role will assist the instructor by helping the class, especially during warm-ups and in small groups, and circulating the class to see who needs extra help. Volunteers might also ask and answer questions for the class, or complete administrative tasks such as making copies, sharpening pencils, and passing out papers.
COMMITMENT:
- Days and times:
- Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (1 day of availability is ok, but 2-3 days of availability is strongly preferred)
9:30 - 11:00 and 12:00 - 1:30 - Frequency: weekly
- Hours: 1.5 hours per shift
LOCATION: IRC in Richmond's office
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with clients to build English skills
- Monitor students’ progress
- Answer questions
- Admin tasks as needed (make copies, pass out papers)
REQUIREMENTS:
- Excellent communication skills
- Comfortable working in a multicultural environment
- Ability to adhere to IRC professional standards and volunteer policies including those around boundaries, confidentiality, COVID-19, etc.
- NOT required, but familiarity with Spanish, Arabic, French, Dari, Pashto, Kinyarwanda, or other client languages is useful!
