English as a Second language (ESL) classes assist refugee and immigrant adults to develop the language skills critical for success in our community. Our classes help adult students to build beginning and intermediate level English vocabulary and communication skills, develop skills needed for the workforce, and learn about American structures and systems. The ultimate goal is to empower clients to be successful and productive members of their communities who are civically engaged and able to pursue the career pathways of their choice. 

Responsibilities: 

  • ESL Class Assistant volunteers assist IRC lead instructors in facilitating groups of students in weekly virtual classes. Online classes meet through the Blackboard platform.  

Requirements  

  • Strong communication skills including communication between instructors and fellow volunteers before/during/ and after classes; and communication with adult English language learners during classes via technology. 
  • Able to connect virtual weekly classes with webcam video and audio. 
  • An interest in or experience working closely with a diverse population of adults. 
  • Comfortable working with variable numbers of students virtually and with students at variable levels of English proficiency. 
  • Comfortable adapting learning activities with limited notice and assisting with (limited) technological troubleshooting as needed. 
  • Background check required. 
  • Must track and log hours volunteered monthly via our online volunteer dashboard. 
  • Must be able to commit to 2 to 6 hours per week for morning and/or afternoon classes. 
  • Must have availability on weekdays between 10:00am – 5:00pm
