The IRC in Atlanta’s English as a Second Language (ESL) classes assist refugee and immigrant adults to develop the language skills critical for success in our community. Our classes help adult students to build beginning and intermediate level English vocabulary and communication skills, develop skills needed for the workforce, and learn about American structures and systems, with the ultimate goal of empowering clients to be successful and productive members of their communities who are civically engaged and able to pursue the career pathways of their choice.
Responsibilities:
- ESL Class Assistant volunteers assist IRC lead instructors in facilitating groups of students in weekly virtual and/or in-person synchronous classes. Online classes meet through the Blackboard platform. In-person classes meet at the IRC in Atlanta’s main site in Northlake.
Requirements:
- Strong communication skills including communication between instructors and fellow volunteers before/during/and after classes; and communication with adult English language learners during classes via technology
- Able to connect to virtual weekly classes with webcam video and audio or to attend in-person classes at the IRC in Atlanta
- An interest in or experience with teaching English as a Second Language
- An interest in or experience with working closely with a diverse population of adults
- Comfortable working with variable numbers of students virtually or in-person, and in working with students at variable levels of English proficiency
- Comfortable adapting learning activities with limited notice and assisting with (limited) technological troubleshooting as needed
- Must have availability on weekdays between 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
- Background check required
- Must submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination
- Must track and log hours volunteered monthly via our online volunteer dashboard
Minimum Commitment:
- 2 to 6 hours per week for morning and/or afternoon classes
