ABOUT THE JOB: This volunteer position will assist a caseworker with interpretation during in-person interviews with clients and weekly phone check-ins. It will require in-office interviews at our office in Glendale and home visits at clients homes anywhere in LA County. Interpreter should feel comfortable hearing situations that involve trauma and handling private/sensitive information.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES:  

  • Gain experience in case management and social service provision that includes significant client interaction 
  • Expand knowledge of US immigration system and experiences involved with seeking asylum 
  • Be a part of a government pilot program seeking to expand alternatives to detention and create a more humane asylum system

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Volunteer will work with IRC's Case Management Pilot Program, which delivers social services (Medi-Cal enrollment, driver's license acquisition, financial coaching, food banks referrals, assistance finding housing or shelters, etc.) to asylum seekers. 
  • Volunteer will work with caseworkers as they undertake interviews with clients (asylum seekers) to assess their specific needs and the services our team can offer them. The volunteer would provide interpretation services during these interviews between the client and caseworker. 
  • Volunteers will be asked to assist caseworkers in communicating with clients weekly to track progress and check-in on wellbeing. The weekly check-ins can occur in-person or virtually (phone call/video chat). 
  • Volunteers will be asked to attend meetings that may take place in our IRC office in Glendale, at LA County libraries, and at client homes throughout LA County. 

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Fluent in spoken and written English
  • Fluent in Spanish and/or Farsi REQUIRED
    • Farsi speakers to begin working ASAP
  • Ability to drive/access to a personal car
  • Has reliable transportation and is able to work anywhere within LA County
  • Interest in working with migrants and supporting vulnerable populations
  • Ability to pay attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Eager to learn and grow in the non-profit sector
