About the role
Adult education class assistants support newly arrived refugee clients in a culturally diverse classroom. Class assistants help support logistics for cultural orientation (CO) and Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) classes, where newly arrived refugee clients gain an understanding of community resources and expectations for the resettlement period. Volunteers support IRC staff with mentoring, classroom assistance, and 1:1 support for adults attending the classes.
Time commitment
Classes generally take place Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:15-1:15. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least two shifts per month for a six month period, with an option for more frequent engagement.
Skills & qualifications
A class assistant must display an interest in supporting refugees and immigrants in their education and career goals. Experience in a multicultural setting or with English language learners is preferred but not required. Class assistants should display initiative to support the self-sufficiency and integration of IRC clients.
