2024 was a difficult year. It brought famines, floods, ongoing and intensifying conflicts across the world. But it was also a year full of hope. We saw it everywhere, in every child who received medical treatment, in every family who received food or fuel through this winter, in every person who began the difficult process of starting over after being displaced from their home.  The coming year will bring new challenges.

Jafiada was six months pregnant when she and her husband had to flee armed conflict in northeast Nigeria in 2014.

"Mothers are the people who rock the baby in one hand and rock the world in the other.” Single mum Zahra loved her job working as a TV anchor in Afghanistan. But in August 2021, everything changed. Her family had to flee Afghanistan, and they became refugees in the UK. With support from the International Rescue Commitee, Zahra and her children are rebuilding their lives and her dreams are as strong as ever.

When asked her favourite thing about her mom Chadia Bchir, 15-year-old Nour Alsaleh says without hesitation, it’s her smile. She sees in it the strength it took her mother to leave war-torn Syria to raise her and her brother in safety in the United Kingdom. “Your smile gives me hope,” she tells Chadia. “I think without you, my dad would probably not have taken the step to leave.
