In the past year, more than one million South Sudanese refugees have fled violence and escaped to Uganda, where they can quickly settle into local communities and rebuild their lives.

Alice is a South Sudanese refugee-turned-entrepreneur who runs a successful nut-roasting business in Uganda. Her family fled to Uganda after her village was attacked by militants. With the IRC' s support, Alice was able to kickstart her business. This is her story.

Uganda has received its millionth refugee from South Sudan, its neighbor consumed by civil war. Uganda could have tried to keep the refugees out, regarding them as a potential burden on a still-developing country. Instead, Uganda embraced the refugees as brothers and sisters who need help and a chance to start a new life somewhere safe.
