On April 27th, nearly 175 community humanitarians attended Journey to the Wasatch, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Salt Lake City’s annual spring fundraising party celebrating the journey hundreds of our refugee neighbors undergo to make their home in Utah.

The International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake City’s education team partnered with Milad Mozari, an assistant professor at the University of Utah’s College of Architecture & Planning, to collaborate on a virtual reality project for refugee and new American youth attending school in the United States.

Drawing on the International Rescue Committee’s (IRC) experience supporting asylum seekers and refugees, we find that the reception approaches that work for people seeking protection, host communities, and asylum systems, embrace five key principles: dignity, sustainability, coordination and responsibility sharing, fairness, and benefit for all.
