Community members are vital to welcoming newcomers to Washington - so we asked a handful of volunteers why building a welcoming community is important to them.

August and September are school enrollment season for the IRC in New York Youth team. With schools closed over the summer, there is typically a backlog of students needing to enroll in school for the first time since arriving in the US. This past school enrollment cycle, the IRC in NY’s Youth Programs team enrolled over 40 youth into the public school system. This is double the number of enrollments from last year!

When refugees arrive in Phoenix, a new phase of their journey begins as they learn about US systems which enable them to better integrate into their new community.  Building financial independence is a key factor in this successful integration. Over the past decade, the IRC has partnered with Desert Financial Credit Union to increase financial literacy and financial independence for these new Americans.

The digital inclusion program at the IRC in Salt Lake City offers refugees the opportunity to learn how to use technology to their advantage while providing access to the Internet and devices.
