The IRC in Boise launches an appeal to support its immigration and citizenship program. There is a high demand from refugees and immigrants for citizenship support.  People who have held green cards for many years are stepping forward to finish the process.  Families have sometimes before made difficult decisions to protect one family member and not others due to the cost. Now, with the support of IRC's dedicated donors, these families will not have to face these gut wrenching decisions.  Any funds raised in excess of those needed for the immediate needs of the clients will support the IRC in Boise's immigration program, including coordinating large scale citizenship workshops, promoting know your rights workshops and citizenship exam prep classes.

“This work has put it all in perspective for me. What I once only read about or heard about in the news, now has a face to it. The struggle refugees and immigrants go through, how much they want to contribute to their new country – they just want a normal life. A safe life.”

Over the past year, the IRC in Salt Lake City has completed 100 citizenship applications and has supported 46 individuals to become new U.S. citizens. Learn about how the immigration team has impacted this support!

IRC and Refugee Advocacy Lab Present "States Lay the Foundation:" A New Blueprint for Refugee & Immigrant Integration (Legislative Samples)

While U.S. citizens have a right to a government-appointed attorney when they are accused of crimes, that’s not the case for immigrants at risk of deportation, even if they were charged with minor traffic offenses. IRC seeks to change the status quo in the Central Valley and Central Coast regions through the newly launched California Legal Fellowship program.

After arriving from Afghanistan as a Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holder in July 2020, Shallah Shaiq began the process of building a new life in the U.S. with her husband and teenage son. Shallah initially earned a bachelor’s degree in law from Afghanistan and carries a passion for working with her Afghan peers through communications. Shallah felt determined to acquire the skills she needed to develop her resume and continue her education in the U.S.  so she could continue to support women’s rights within an Afghan immigrant organization.  

For refugees coming to the United States, the process of attaining citizenship is long and challenging.
