In August 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been particularly affected, with thousands of suspected cases and hundreds of deaths reported. This new variant's rapid spread in the DRC and neighboring countries like Burundi is a major concern.
The International Rescue Committee is responding to mpox in the DRC and Burundi through Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE), medical referral and infection prevention and control measures. This report provides an overview of the situation of mpox and IRC’s response in impacted regions.
