IRC statement on Emergency Medical Team in Gaza

January 18, 2024 — This morning, at approximately 6am, the compound in Gaza housing staff members of the Emergency Medical Team from the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) was severely damaged as a result of a missile strike. A number of team members and the compound’s security guard suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The team have been evacuated to another location inside Gaza and are currently unable to continue their life-saving work at Nasser Hospital. The IRC and MAP are working with the UN to determine what has happened and to ensure the continued safety of our teams and viability of their vital humanitarian work. We re-emphasise our call that humanitarian workers and civilians must be protected at all times from attack. We cannot comment further until details are clarified.
