Fueled by conflict, climate change, and food insecurity, the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan has forced thousands of families to flee their homes and even the country. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) provides vital support to Afghans who have endured four decades of conflict, as well as natural disasters and the spread of COVID-19. We are also helping Afghan refugees resettle in other countries and Afghans who supported the U.S. mission in their country.
How much do you know about the IRC's work in Afghanistan and the ways we, and our supporters, help Afghan families to seek safety around the world? Take our 3-question quiz to test your knowledge!
The IRC works in thousands of villages across nine provinces in Afghanistan, with Afghans making up more than 99% of our staff in the country. This is critical to our success because local staff speak the language, know the customs, and can help us reach communities in need.
And more, including delivering critical information in the local language and providing health clinics with essential supplies. The IRC is committed to staying in Afghanistan as millions of people face a crisis fueled by conflict, climate change, and COVID-19. We are providing humanitarian relief and recovery assistance to meet the urgent needs of displaced Afghan families.
IRC offices in Mexico, Uganda and the United States are helping to welcome Afghan families to their new homes and provide critical resources like medical care, face masks, baby supplies, mobile phones, and cash assistance to meet basic needs. Families arriving from Afghanistan have been through so much. Many of them risked their lives to flee, often leaving with few belongings, hoping to find safety for themselves and their families.
