Nelson’s favorite part of the job is seeing the joy on his clients’ faces when he shows them their new hairstyles. He said, “When you are doing something good…you feel confident. When you are working on somebody…you look and their face is so happy.” He can’t wait to take what he’s learned from Nabaasa to bring joy to clients in his own barbershop.

The DRC is struggling to recover from decades of conflict, ongoing violence, and widespread disease including COVID-19 and Ebola. Security has severely deteriorated since 2017, displacing over 5 million people and leaving 19.6 million in need of humanitarian assistance.

The IRC helps Congolese people meet their urgent needs and provides emergency health care, shelter, water and sanitation. They lead peace-building projects, offer psychosocial services, host education programs, and more.

Ways you can support the people served by the IRC today

Refugees are parents, business owners, activists, and so much more. They enrich our communities and cultures around the world. Let’s show our new neighbors they are welcome in our communities.

There are countless, everyday ways we can support refugees to recover and thrive. The ideas proposed in this activity are just a handful of possibilities.

Have other ideas for ways to support refugees in your community? Share them with us!

We invite individuals and organizations to partner with us to address today’s skyrocketing global needs for humanitarian assistance. Your support can help the IRC reach and serve people affected by conflict and disaster worldwide.
