Mon Rovîa's new single, 'Winter Wash 24,' is deeply personal for the Afro Appalachian folk artist. Drawing inspiration from the humanitarian efforts of the International Rescue Committee (IRC), the song reflects his experiences as a refugee and his desire to shed light on the struggles faced by those displaced by conflict and crisis. The track is the second single off his upcoming EP, Act 4: Atonement, slated for release on January 10,2025. All proceeds from the song will support the IRC.

A personal connection to the cause

Having been born into conflict in Liberia and later rescued from war, Mon Rovîa understands the refugee experience intimately.

“Part of my inspiration for writing 'Winter Wash 24' comes from the incredible humanitarian work the IRC has done since Einstein spearheaded the organization in the lead up to World War II,” he shares. "In these unprecedented times, it's more important than ever to find better ways to care for and love our neighbors," he emphasizes.

The message behind the music

“Winter Wash 24” addresses the feelings of helplessness and apathy many experience when faced with global crises.

“It’s about the elephant in the room—the cognitive dissonance we feel in the West; witnessing the horrors on our phones, stuck feeling helpless in any of our efforts. So apathy grows,” Mon explains. His music serves as a call to action, urging listeners to engage with and care for those in need.

Empowering the voices of refugees

Faith Akovi Cooper, IRC Regional Director for the U.S. Southern Border, resonates with Mon’s mission. “With over 120 million people displaced globally, more attention is needed on the challenges refugees face in their journeys to find safety,” she states. “Winter Wash 24 elevates the experience of refugees for listeners and demonstrates the power of welcome.”

The United Nations Refugee Agency estimates that approximately 2.9 million refugees will need resettlement in 2025, yet fewer than half of one percent will ever find a permanent home. Mon Rovîa’s music aims to unite people across borders and inspire a culture of acceptance and support for refugees and asylum seekers.
