2022 was a year marked with uncertainty for many families. This was especially critical for refugees and asylum seekers who were living in temporary housing. The IRC in NY is thankful to the many housing partners and landlords that continued to show up for clients during this difficult year.

Jeff has been a landlord since the early 70s. In the 90s he began renting out his apartments to Russian and Kazakhstan refugees. Jeff shares how one day he was getting a haircut at the Astor Barbershop which was owned by Russian immigrants. They shared with him how difficult it was to support their friends and community members in finding a place to live. Housing shortages then were also a harsh reality for many recent arrivals, and Jeff stepped up to help his neighboring migrant community.

A supportive landlord works with the tenant to ensure a home is safe. In one interaction with an immigrant from Ireland, Jeff shares how they talked about American culture. In this exchange, the man was working on painting the apartment and shared a reflection about the differences between Germany and America. He soon shares the sentiment that he feels welcomed and considered in the community.

Throughout the years, Jeff has since rented apartments to migrants from Bangladesh, Central America, Pakistan, El Salvador, and other countries.

During the emerging crisis that affected Afghan families, Jeff was determined to assist the Housing & Logistics department with making some apartments available to families. In 2022, Jeff opened up his apartments in Briarwood, Queens for some IRC clients to have a fresh start. Clients have moved into these homes with the support and community they need to focus on their new lives. When individuals have faced violence or loss, it is important for them to feel safe and connected to their remaining family members. On other occasions, Jeff has also supported placing clients receiving IRC intensive case management.

Jeff cares deeply about ensuring his apartment buildings are an inviting and safe option, especially for many families starting over. His apartments are shared by a diverse community of international migrants and local community members. As a landlord, it can be difficult to support each tenant in navigating cultural differences. However, Jeff does not shy away from having important conversations about diversity and inclusion. He takes each opportunity to offer guidance to tenants in need of extra support and to those who are having trouble understanding each other.

The IRC in NY is grateful to Jeff for doing his best to make housing accessible and affordable to IRC clients, newcomers, and all New Yorkers.
