Farahnaz is the guest speaker for a discussion following ANGELS ARE MADE OF LIGHT, the first documentary featured in the IRC's Film Series on May 1st.

Farahnaz Anwari spent much of her life working tirelessly, despite political unrest, conflict and displacement, to ensure children from her native Afghanistan had access to education. She spent fourteen years as a grade school teacher serving the public in makeshift classrooms, sometimes in tents or community spaces, in Kabul.
Conflict, instability and the economy, she says, forced her and her children to leave Afghanistan for Iran, and then to Pakistan, where she continued to work as a teacher. She and her family were in resettled by the IRC in March of 2018—and this May, she will be a guest speaker for our 11th Annual International Documentary Film Series, where she will share her experience as an educator and answer questions.
Angels are Made of Light
"The film showed images that reminded me of past experiences—seeing what children go through was hard on my heart," said Farahnaz. "But that's why I chose to become a teacher. I wanted to contribute to the future of children in Afghanistan."
Farahnaz and her four children were resettled by the IRC in San Diego last year.
Our guest speaker will provide us with lessons learned from Afghanistan's schools while the documentary feature, Angels Are Made of Light, will give viewers a chance to follow and learn from the students and teachers at a school in an old neighborhood of Kabul that is slowly rebuilding from past conflicts.
