This summer, the IRC in NY’s Economic Empowerment Department hosted a range of workshops and career fairs to support clients in expanding their job search and networking skills.

Summer Job Fair

On July 17th, the IRC in NY’s Economic Empowerment department in collaboration with Sakhi and Tent Partnership for Refugees hosted a job fair for clients. This fair was designed to invite clients to learn about different sectors and possibilities as they think about entering the workforce.

Sakhi supports South Asian women who were or are undergoing violence through tailored programming and services. They are a dedicated partner in this mission to support the economic empowerment of clients.

The IRC in NY is grateful to the following employer partners who took the time to talk with clients at the Fair: Hot Bread Kitchen, Pfizer, Americare, VHG Group (Petits Poussins and Bilingual Nest Daycare), and Star Hospitality Group. They tabled at the event and provided one-on-one conversations with groups to discuss their training opportunities and workforce positions.

This summer job fair gave clients the chance to learn about different jobs in hospitality, daycare, home aid, and more.

On one occasion, a family of four signed up to talk to Bilingual Nest Daycare and Preschool. They previously worked at their local church and led multiple youth programs in their home country. The Daycare Center discussed their bi-lingual offerings in their afterschool program. Together, they discussed where and how the family members could be a fit, including what roles they could consider.

Our NY Employment Partnerships Specialist shares: there were over 100 clients from Sakhi and IRC in attendance and the energy in the room was electric! Numerous meaningful connections were fostered between employers and job seekers, and many were able to secure a job shortly after the event. It was truly a heartwarming day and the success of the job fair was undoubtedly a result of the combined efforts of Sakhi, Tent, and IRC staff.

Looking Ahead

The IRC in NY hopes to connect with more employers to offer a wider range of training and upskilling opportunities. It is challenging for refugees, immigrants, and migrants to seek jobs and build their careers alone. The role of helpful networks and training opportunities is invaluable. Partners are essential for these efforts because a conversation can become the bridge to a job opportunity.
