A Day of Connection and Celebration
The IRC in Denver's third annual Kite Flying Event recently brought a wave of joy and unity to the refugee community. Held at the picturesque New Roots Garden at Ellis Elementary, near the IRC in Denver office, this event provided a much-needed moment of happiness and connection. The garden, with its community plots of vegetables and flowers planted by IRC in Denver clients, and a sensory garden designed to engage all five senses, offered a perfect backdrop for the festivities. New colorful lounge chairs among the blooms and vegetation added to the inviting atmosphere, while the playgrounds and fields provided ample space for running, playing, and launching kites.
Kites: Symbols of Hope and Freedom
Kites have long been symbols of hope, freedom, and the human spirit’s ability to rise above adversity. With this in mind, the event organizers aimed to create a day where refugees could come together, celebrate their journeys, and express solidarity with those still in dangerous situations. The event drew participants from diverse backgrounds, including families, children, and the elderly, all eager to join in the fun. Dedicated IRC in Denver volunteers played a crucial role in planning and organizing the event and ensuring its success.
Learning and Fun for All Ages
IRC in Denver staff members with childhood kite-flying experience in Afghanistan patiently taught the children how to handle the strings and keep the kites soaring high. The sight of kites dancing in the sky served as a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength of the refugee community. For the children, additional activities included hula hoops, giant bubble wands, pickup soccer games, and coloring. DJ Naser provided lively music for listening and dancing, adding to the festive atmosphere. A potluck featuring dishes from around the world allowed participants to share and enjoy a variety of flavors.
Members of the IRC in Denver's Client Advisory Council mingled with participants to gather insights and better understand the challenges faced during the resettlement process. This valuable information will help improve the IRC in Denver’s service delivery model.
A Day of Hope and Joy
For many, the kites represented more than just a fun activity; they symbolized hope for a better future and a reminder that, even in difficult times, moments of beauty and joy can be found. This successful kite flying event is a testament to the power of community and the importance of creating spaces where everyone, regardless of their background, can come together to celebrate, share, and support one another.
The IRC in Denver's Kite Flying event not only brought smiles and laughter, but also reinforced the strength and unity of our refugee community. Here’s to many more such joyful gatherings in the future!
