In today’s interconnected world, the strength of a community often lies in the partnerships it fosters. For non-profits, these alliances are crucial in amplifying their mission, expanding their reach, and enhancing their impact. One such example is the current collaboration between the Denver Film Festival and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Denver, which highlights the importance of community partners in increasing non-profit visibility.
Denver Film Festival and IRC in Denver: A Perfect Partnership
The Denver Film Festival has chosen the IRC in Denver as its non-profit partner for the screening of the film Champions of the Golden Valley on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 3:30 PM MST at the Holiday Theater. The Denver 47th Film Festival, held annually, is the largest film festival in the Rocky Mountain region, with 200+ concurrent screenings serving over 20,000 attendees across various venues. The festival showcases a diverse array of films from local and international filmmakers and additionally features immersive and virtual reality programming, industry panels, red carpet events and much more. It truly is a vibrant celebration of cinema attracting filmmakers, industry professionals, and film enthusiasts from all around the world. Therefore, this partnership between the Denver Film Festival and the IRC in Denver is a true testament to the power of community collaboration in bringing important stories to the forefront.
Champions of the Golden Valley, directed by Coloradans Ben Sturgulewski and produced by Katie Stjernholm, tells the inspiring story of young athletes in the remote mountain villages of Bamyan, Afghanistan. Despite having minimal gear and makeshift skis, these young villagers from rival ethnic groups come together for a thrilling mountain race. The film beautifully captures their newfound passion for skiing and the camaraderie and resilience they develop on the slopes. These lessons become even more poignant as the skiers face the collapse of their country and many are displaced as refugees.
The screening of Champions of the Golden Valley during election week is particularly timely. In a period where negative narratives about refugees and newcomers are prevalent, this film offers a powerful counter-narrative. It showcases the strength, resilience, and shared humanity of refugees, challenging misconceptions and fostering empathy.
The IRC in Denver, along with its clients, staff, and supporters, will be present at the event to mingle and chat with attendees. This presence not only provides an opportunity for the community to learn more about the IRC’s work but also allows for meaningful connections to be made. The IRC is excited to engage with the community and share the impactful stories of the people they serve.
As the community gathers to watch Champions of the Golden Valley, they will not only witness an inspiring story but also engage with the vital work of the IRC in Denver, fostering a deeper understanding and connection within the community.
The IRC in Denver thanks the Denver Film Festival, Ben Sturgulewski, and Katie Stjernholm for their collaboration and is excited to spend an inspiring afternoon with you!
