The IRC in New York's Immigration team spent the day at the Brooklyn Public Library on August 19th for the monthly citizenship workshop that is held on the third Friday of every month. Whether they heard about the event through their school, their friend, or their newspaper, all of the participants there were able to partake in the event because of a partnership between the IRC and Citizenshipworks, an online tool designed to streamline the process of applying for U.S. Citizenship. By rewording many of the questions and presenting them in an easy online form, Citizenshipworks offers a great opportunity for Legal Permanent Residents to apply for citizenship on their own. The IRC and Citizenshipworks held this event to offer a little more guidance to users who wanted it.

Upon opening, dozens of Legal Permanent Residents wanting to begin the tedious process of applying for naturalization walked through the doors. After completing eligibility screening, IRC staff and volunteers assisted participants in completing the Naturalization form using Citizenshipworks. Before leaving, each participant met with a legal representative who carefully reviewed their form and provided final instructions for submitting the application to US Citizenship & Immigration Services. By the end of the daylong event, 21 Legal Permanent Residents walked out of the library having taken a major step forward in the path to U.S. Citizenship.
