Students on a field trip at summer camp.

This fall marks the IRC in Atlanta’s 25th year providing youth programming at Clarkston High School! After an incredible Summer Camp, our dedicated team are thoroughly enjoying reconnecting with students and partners as we look forward to even greater success in the school year ahead.

Over six weeks, from June to July, we partnered with over 15 organizations to serve more than 30 students as part of our 2024 Youth Futures Summer Camp. Each week featured exciting field trips, water balloon battles, resume workshops, and college visits.

Thanks to Microsoft Atlanta, students explored an AI-generated space journey while gaining valuable tech skills. With Once Upon Our Time Capsule, our campers created time capsules to open in 10 years’ time. Students also encountered wildlife face-to-face at sanctuary trips organized by the Sierra Club and built soaring rockets with our friends at Decatur Makers

The success of this year’s Youth Futures Summer Camp was made possible thanks to the support of our amazing partners. From building life skills to fostering creativity and exploration, each IRC partner plays a crucial role in the lives of refugee students.

Internally and cross-departmentally, the IRC in Atlanta’s New Roots, My New School, Connect 2 Success, and Economic Empowerment programs all contributed time, knowledge, and energy to a well-rounded Summer Camp experience for our students.

And to our external partners—Decatur Makers, Sierra Club (Georgia Chapter), Atlanta History Center, Microsoft Atlanta, Center for Victims of Torture, Publix, Step Ahead Scholars, Once Upon Our Time Capsule, SCAD, DeKalb County’s Kids Summer Lunch Program, Northlake Church of Christ, Clarkston High School, and The D. Abbott Turner Program in Ethics and Servant Leadership—THANK YOU! Your partnership has empowered our students and made for an incredibly memorable summer, and we are truly grateful to you!

Finally, it is with enthusiasm that we welcome our new Youth Education and Learning Manager, Dulce-Marie Flecha, to the IRC in Atlanta team. Dulce-Marie brings over a decade of dedicated experience working with refugees and immigrants, and we are excited to have her leading our youth programs and continuing this success.
