For recently arrived families, access to technology is essential for navigating daily life.

A computer can be a vital tool for applying to jobs, continuing education and staying connected to loved ones.

KindWorks, a local nonprofit dedicated to mobilizing volunteers to support community needs, has been an invaluable partner to the IRC in Silver Spring. Through their Digital Empowerment Program, KindWorks refurbishes donated laptops, providing them to students, families and individuals identified by local agencies and nonprofits. Over the years, they have generously donated more than 200 laptops to IRC clients, enabling them to build their futures with access to online resources.

For Carla Stephania, who is working full-time while studying to become a certified nurse, receiving a laptop from KindWorks made a significant difference. Carla shares:

The laptop has helped me a lot. I can easily keep up with my studies and work.

Before, she had to attend driving classes on her phone, which made it difficult to follow along.

Now, it is much easier to access the resources for all of my studies.

With local need continuing to grow, KindWorks is seeking additional laptop donations to sustain this critical program. Businesses and individuals can support this effort by donating used laptops, which are securely wiped, refurbished and prepared for new users. By giving a second life to gently used devices, donors can play a direct role in helping families access online education, apply for jobs and stay connected. For students, these laptops are an essential tool to completing coursework and accessing academic resources.
