In past months, the IRC in Silver Spring Youth Team organized a trip for refugee youth to go roller skating at the Lanham Skate Center. Of the 17 middle and high school students, the majority had never been roller skating before and were excited to try a new activity.
Activities like roller skating encourage youth to try new things, and practice social-emotional skills such as resilience and perseverance.
The volunteers and staff attending saw youth go from quiet, reserved and unsure about talking to their peers, to laughing, helping each other and socializing with peers by the end of the event. There were plenty of smiles, laughs and – of course – falls, but everyone had a wonderful time!
