At a time when the U.S. refugee resettlement program is under unprecedented pressure to downsize, the Wichita community continues to stand by refugees and the IRC in Wichita.
Since January 2017, the office has seen a dramatic increase in volunteer applications, volunteer hours and in-kind donations. Currently, there are 55 active volunteers that support the IRC in Wichita and Garden City; they support case workers, employment specialists, provide Cultural Orientation, Job Readiness Training, and English language training (ELT). A cadre of volunteer mentors also work with refugees; they are matched with clients based on interest and need, and provide support for individuals and families as they begin their new life. “The refugee program continues to be supported by the tireless efforts of our volunteers; their work not only supports our staff, but exhibits the welcoming nature of Wichita for our clients,” says Michele Green, Executive Director for IRC.
Wizie Eads, a volunteer since 2016, is one of the many who support IRC programs and clients. During the last two years, Eads has volunteered weekly in the office, assisting with case management, employment and occasionally assisting with IRC’s volunteer-led ELT program. ” I enjoy sharing the many treasures Wichita has to offer as a new home, and making refugees feel welcome as new citizens and neighbors - especially given how vulnerable they can be moving from harm to home.” Eads, said.
During the week of April 23, staff and clients of the IRC want to take this opportunity to recognize our volunteers for their tireless efforts and commitment to supporting refugees. Their contributions are invaluable to the new arrivals who are rebuilding their lives and planting roots in Wichita.
Since last fall, Eads has been a family mentor. As a mentor she engages in activities with and provides support to newly arrived refugee family. Recently, Eads said that after meeting with family a few times they had never truly experienced Wichita. “I took the mother and her son on a tour of Wichita, it was one of the first chances they had to really see the city and we had a wonderful time.”
Throughout April, staff and clients of the IRC want to take this opportunity to recognize our volunteers for their tireless efforts and commitment to supporting refugees. Their contributions are invaluable to the new arrivals who are rebuilding their lives and planting roots in Wichita.
