On September 16th, leaders from different Churches in the Wichita community were invited to the IRC’s second annual Intern-Faith Summit for Refugees in Wichita. The meeting was an opportunity for leaders from different religious backgrounds to come together to learn about the refugee resettlement process and the services provided by the IRC.
The morning began with a discussion led by the Kansas Office of Refugee Resettlement, Statewide Director spoke about recent updates about refugees resettling in Kansas and provided some updates about the newly formed Kansas Office of Refugee Resettlement (KSOR).
The participants were given an opportunity to learn more about the process that someone has to take to receive refugee status and to be able to resettle in the United States. One participant commented, “I didn't know that such a small number of refugees are fortunate enough to be resettled and that it can take so long (up to12 years) to make it to their new home country. The numbers of refugees are astounding. The people who make it here are truly the survivors.”
Guests were also given a presentation by the IRC’s Resettlement Supervisor who provided an overview of the case management and employment services provided by the IRC. “Our direct service team provides services to our clients from the moment they step off of the plane until they are self-sufficient and integrated into the Wichita community.” The Resettlement Supervisor, said.
During lunch guests had an opportunity to hear from a former refugee who had resettled in Wichita. The speaker shared his story of his path to America and provided insight into his first few months in Kansas. When given an opportunity to ask the speaker questions, the guests asked thoughtful questions about what would have made resettlement easier or more accommodating for him. One guest even asking, “What would it take to make this community your home?”
The day’s events wrapped up with a presentation about the different ways that an individual or group can become involved with the IRC. If your church or organization is interested in working with the IRC please contact the Volunteer and External Relations Coordinator at [email protected]
