When Mohammad and his family fled to the United States, they thought their struggles were in the past. In his native Afghanistan, Mohammad worked with the U.S. and endured extreme threats from the Taliban. With two children under the age of five, Mohammad realized his family’s future in Afghanistan was not safe.

Mohammad's family arrived in the U.S. at the end of February 2020. He described a feeling of peace and security. His hopes of seeing his children build a future here and lead full lives were now possible. Due to the rapid spread of COVID-19, those dreams are in doubt. Mohammad is struggling to find work with most businesses shuttered. His children can’t go to daycare or school. He fears he won’t be able to provide the basic necessities for his family.

To support Mohammad and other families affected by COVID-19, the IRC in Silver Spring created Wish Lists on Amazon where individuals can donate items that families requested. “I thank everyone who has donated so far.  I hope to support those in need in the future when I am in a better position to do so.  Human beings need to support each other.” - Mohammad
