Buying a home can be a complicated process. Home Buyer Education and Down Payment Assistance can work together to help you. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Salt Lake City offers Home Buyer Education courses designed for refugee and immigrant populations and Down Payment Assistance for qualifying applicants when funds are available. We also recommend the following resources.
First-time Home Buyer Education
Make sure you know your rights, what to expect and get the support you need by taking a first-time homebuyer education course. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Salt Lake City recommends the following:
- IRC in Salt Lake City: Classroom-based 2-session course (attendance both days required) on October 10 & 17 from 5:30-7:30pm. This course is free.
- Neighborworks Salt Lake: Online course. Self-directed. $75.
- Community Development Corporation of Utah (CDCU): Online course. Self-directed. $75.
Down Payment Assistance (DPA)
DPA is a grant or conditional loan that can be applied to the up front costs of purchasing a home. Agencies in Salt Lake County occasionally have DPA funds available for qualified home buyers. The IRC SLC currently does not have DPA funds available. Please check with the following agencies for fund availability, eligibility requirements and program details.
