On July 30th, GenR LA joined forces with the IRC LA office to host a Bikes for Refugees Volunteer Day. The GenR: LA leadership team led a fundraising campaign, which supported transportation costs, as well as the purchase of 10 brand new bicycles, which were distributed to the clients at the event. Water bottles, helmets, and a safety demonstration were also provided through our generous donors.
It was an emotion filled day for volunteers and the clients alike – many smiles were exchanged throughout the course of the event. One IRC client stated that she had not been on a bicycle since the bombs in Iraq started. Another IRC client expressed his eagerness to ride his new bike to college. The gratitude felt from the clients was overwhelming.
We thank all of our volunteers, and our local bike community for their partnership in this effort. Special thanks to Jon Riddle (bike assembly guru), Dave Somers (bike safety presentation), Jones Bicycles II, TOMS, and Kali Protectives for their donations.
