Cashier training at the IRC in Turlock, 2016
A client receives one-on-one job training.

The IRC in Modesto and Turlock offers one-on-one and group training to prepare clients for entry-level cashier positions in the local job market.

So far this year, almost two dozen IRC clients from the Modesto and Turlock areas have participated in cash register training and seven of these have secured their first jobs in the U.S. One of these participants, Wasim, successfully secured a job as a cashier in Modesto soon after completing the training.

Originally from Kabul, Afghanistan, Wasim holds a diploma with a major in business administration. He can program computers, install and maintain computer hardware, and use common word processing, database, and spreadsheet software. Starting in 2006, he worked with local and international companies in Afghanistan as an interpreter, a procurement officer, an administrative clerk, and a professional driver.

Wasim had this to say about IRC’s cashier training program: “It was a good opportunity for me to get cashier training. It was very helpful. It’s good to have some experience as a cashier before you apply for any related jobs.” He views his experience with IRC services in general in a positive light: “IRC is a good place to have great people teach you well, whether it’s ESL classes or any other training classes.”

Thinking to the future, Wasim hopes to first become a licensed vocational nurse and then a registered nurse. As he moves steadily towards his goals, he will be able to put his extensive professional experience and education to use in his current role as a cashier as well as in any other jobs he takes on.
