Mohamed came to our Immigration Team with the goal of becoming a naturalized citizen last year. As a former refugee originally from Somalia, Mohamed had made a great effort to learn English since his arrival, but initially confronted difficulties due to memory loss and trouble hearing. Despite these difficulties, Mohamed remained focused on his goal, looking forward to the day he would officially become a naturalized citizen in his new home. His IRC English & Civics instructor John Simpson described Mohamed as a “diligent and significantly committed student” who attended class regularly and put forth a tremendous effort.

Mohamed threw himself into his civics and English language studies, participating in IRC's citizenship prep classes every single week. All of that effort and dedication paid off. During the final week of February 2020, Mohamed received his Certificate of Naturalization and became a U.S. Citizen.

Following his interview, he turned to John and said "Teacher, today I am very happy.” Bravo, Mohamed!
