On the sunny afternoon of July 21st, the International Rescue Committee in Denver's New Roots program hosted it's first-ever community potluck at the beautiful Ellis Elementary Garden. This vibrant event brought together IRC staff, supporters, and clients for an unforgettable day filled with games, music, and a delightful array of cultural dishes.
The potluck was more than just a gathering; it was a celebration of the accomplishments of the New Roots program, which was established earlier this year. The New Roots program, under the supervision of Khaja Humayoun Amini, aims to help refugees and immigrants integrate into their new communities through urban farming and gardening, promoting food security, and fostering a sense of belonging.
As attendees arrived, they were greeted by the lively sounds of music that set the tone for the day. The garden was adorned with colorful decorations, creating a festive atmosphere that invited everyone to relax and enjoy. Children and adults alike participated in various games, bringing laughter and joy to the event.
One of the highlights of the potluck was the incredible spread of cultural dishes. Participants brought homemade dishes that reflected their diverse backgrounds, offering a culinary journey around the world. From savory Bolani Qabeli (Afghan stuffed flatbread) to Shawarma, there was something to tantalize every palate. The sharing of food not only satisfied hunger but also sparked conversations and connections among attendees.
Throughout the event, the sense of community was palpable. IRC in Denver staff and supporters mingled with clients, sharing stories and celebrating the progress made through the New Roots program. The garden, a symbol of growth and renewal, provided the perfect backdrop for this gathering of hearts and minds.
As the day came to a close, it was clear that the potluck had achieved its goal of fostering community and celebrating the achievements of the New Roots program. The smiles, laughter, and shared experiences left a lasting impression on everyone who attended.
The IRC in Denver looks forward to hosting more events like this in the future, continuing to build a strong, supportive community where everyone feels welcome and valued. Here’s to many more celebrations of culture, community, and growth!
