Last year, the IRC in Seattle launched the Better Together Family Program to support refugee mothers of young children who are new to the Seattle area. Program participants recently went on a fun, educational, and quintessentially Seattle outing to the Pacific Science Center – complete with a ride on the monorail! A big thanks to the Pacific Science Center for donating admission for the field trip and to the generous IRC supporters who covered transportation and meal costs.
Through in-home coaching and group activities, the Better Together Family Program promotes early learning, healthy child development, and child-parent attachment. Participants expand their skills related to nutrition and healthcare, safety, sleep patterns, developmental transitions, healthy birth practices, and more. Mothers also make positive social connections with other parents in their community.
The IRC in Seattle will soon complete a one-year pilot of this program, helping 16 new mothers in the Afghan community, and seeks additional resources to expand services to families from more communities. By helping young families connect with one another and their new communities, we can set children and their parents up for long-term success.
