Latest Channel death demands urgent change to UK's approach to asylum, says IRC UK

London UK, October 28, 2024 —  Denisa Delić, Director of Advocacy, International Rescue Committee UK, says, 

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of yet another life in the Channel yesterday. This is the fourth person who has died in these circumstances in the past week alone, and the 57^th such death this year – a devastating toll that underscores the immense risks that people are forced to take in search of safety. 

We call on the government to urgently establish safe routes, and invest in a compassionate and effective asylum system to protect those fleeing conflict and persecution. Only by introducing these measures can we prevent further tragedies in the Channel.”
