About the role

Shopping volunteers take IRC clients to shop for immediate clothing needs within the first few weeks after their arrival in Boise. Volunteers provide client transportation to and from Deseret Industries in Boise, and help clients navigate where to find the items they need at the store. Volunteers support clients in finding correct sizes and styles. Volunteers may have the option to drive clients in their personal vehicle.

Time commitment

Volunteers commit to at least 6 months of service. Shopping usually occurs on Fridays between 10am-1pm. A lead volunteer coordinates the shopping guides, as the number of clients who need to go shopping varies from week to week.

Skills & qualifications

Shopping guides must be comfortable and confident in a multicultural, multilingual setting. Shopping guides use both verbal and non-verbal communication to assist newly arrived refugees to navigate multiple retail departments. Must be culturally sensitive and respectful of diverse backgrounds. Shopping guides complete donation voucher paperwork and return it to IRC staff for recording client purchases. Volunteers who use their personal vehicle must comply with the IRC Vehicle Use Agreement.

How to apply

All prospective volunteers must complete each step outlined on the Volunteer Opportunities page under Volunteer process.
