The global hunger and malnutrition crisis is growing, spurned by conflict, the climate crisis and economic turmoil. Going in to 2024, 864 million people around the world face severe food insecurity, and 705 000 at catastrophic levels (IPC 5), in contexts like Gaza, Sudan, Yemen and Afghanistan.
At any given time, 45 million children around the world are suffering from acute malnutrition, and up to 2 million children a year die, despite the existence of a simple, affordable treatment–a peanut-based paste known as Ready-to-Use-Therapeutic-Food. In places where the International Rescue Committee (RESCUE) works, less than 1 in 5 children with acute malnutrition historically receive this life-saving treatment.
RESCUE has been researching simplified approaches for treatment of acute malnutrition for a decade and the body of research is now significant. The evidence is consistent that simplified approaches are more cost-effective ways to treat acute malnutrition. The solution is a simplified treatment to reach every child.
RESCUE has launched the new venture, the Movement against Malnutrition, which advocates for and champions all radically simpler, scalable and cost-efficient treatment approaches for acute malnutrition - and ensuring more children receive life-saving treatment with the same resources.
