Group opportunities in Tucson

The IRC in Tucson offers several team oriented activities. These activities range from group work days at a refugee garden to organizing fundraising events. Opportunities: 

Community Garden Assistance

• Number of Volunteers: 4 to 6 individuals
• Time: Seasonal. Please contact [email protected] for more information
• Description: Volunteer as a group and assist refugees and the Nutrition and Food Security team tend to community gardens where families grow their own fresh produce.

Home Cleaning Supplies Drive

• Number of Volunteers: Unlimited
• Time: Negotiable
• Description: Include multipurpose cleaners, laundry detergent and dish soap. These items are often expensive and difficult for newly arrived refugees to purchase within their first few months of arrival.

Gift Card Drive 

• Number of Volunteers: Unlimited
• Time: Negotiable
• Description: Gift cards to stores like Walmart, Target and Fry's offer newly arrived refugees the opportunity to choose for themselves the things they need. In addition, gift cards offer refugee families and individuals an important acculturation opportunity as they will need to traverse a new bus route to get to the store and also interact, in English, at the store once they arrive.

Hygiene Products Drive

• Number of Volunteers: Unlimited
• Time: Negotiable
• Description: A hygiene products drive helps refugees in Tucson obtain the necessary items they need that may be expensive on a limited budget. Businesses or community organizations will host a hygiene item drive prior to their scheduled event date to raise necessary resources for the children and their families.

Backpack and School Supplies Drive

• Number of Volunteers: 1-2 organizers and entire organization or business
• Time: Negotiable
• Description: IRC will provide you with all the necessary marketing materials and resources to host a donation drive within your office. With support from your business or organization, the IRC in Tucson will distribute backpacks and school supplies to newly arrived refugee children. Equipped with these items, children will be prepared to start learning at their new school

Adult Work Bag Drive

• Number of Volunteers: 1-2 organizers and entire organization or business
• Time: Negotiable
• Description: After a newly arrived refugee receives a job, there are basic items that make the commute to and from work easier.

Socks and Underwear Drive 

• Number of Volunteers: Unlimited
• Time: Negotiable
• Description: Volunteer as a group and collect socks and new underwear for all ages. 

Handmade Quilt Donations Drive

• Number of Volunteers: Unlimited
• Time: Negotiable
• Description: Volunteer as a group and make quilts! Other handmade items, like warm scarves and winter hats, are also needed for newly arrived refugees in the winter.
