What is Co-Sponsorship?
- Co-sponsorship partners a community group with a family to enhance the quality of life for refugees as they settle in to their new homes. In co-sponsorship, the community group partners with IRC to provide the core services that help refugees attain self-sufficiency as they arrive in the US: Such as picking the family up at the airport, helping them find housing, transporting them to their health screening, enrolling them in school and ESOL. We will work with each group to determine which services the group is best suited to provide and IRC will match them with an appropriate family.
Who can be a Co-Sponsor?
- Co-sponsors are formed of groups of 6-10 people and can take many forms including local clubs, faith-based institutions, community groups, and many more. All co-sponsor groups must be located within 100 miles of the IRC office. In addition to the responsibilities with the families, we ask that each co-sponsor raise $5000 (can have up to $1500 comprised of in-kind donations such as furniture and household items) to be used on behalf of the sponsored family for housing.
What are the benefits of Co-Sponsorship?
Co-sponsorship provides the opportunity for the family to have immediate connections within the community to help orient them to their new homes. These connections are invaluable for the family and can help them transition to their new life faster and provide stronger emotional support. Co-sponsors also experience incredible benefit in their lives as they build strong relationships with their refugee family.
